Siobhan Davies Dance Studio

Introduction

Referred to in the prose of Shakespeare, Chaucer and Dickens, the Elephant and Castle has historically been a hub for people, arts and culture. Past residents include stars of film such as Charlie Chaplin and Michael Caine; the father of electricity Michael Faraday; potter George Tinworth; poet Robert Browning and author, artist and thinker John Ruskin.

Southwark has long been home to an influential arts movement and is already graced with many notable galleries. Famous artists such as Pissarro, Blake and Ruskin have lived in the area and painted in the borough.

In the immediate Elephant and Caste area, there are an array of fascinating arts organisations and venues. These include Pullens Yards, Corsica Studios, NEON and Roxy Studios.

The Coronet Cinema has continued to operate in the area over recent years, in a range of guises, but mostly as a sought after live music venue. The Coronet has undergone an extensive investment, renovation and improvement programme to enable it to compete with the best of London’s live music venues.

Regeneration activity has also attracted a range of photographers and film makers that are documenting changes to the area.

Community, creativity and culture all will play a role in shaping the place that the Elephant and Castle will become, and in bringing forward the area’s potential as a cultural hub of London.
