Lend Lease launch Consultation Event for first new homes

Lend Lease held an exhibition over the weekend (7th & 8th October 2011) revealing the initial proposals for the first new homes and phase one of the Heygate Estate. Local residents and the community were invited and it was a very successful event with a great deal of discussion and feedback.

The exhibition revealed the initial proposals from the architects, dRMM, for the first phase of the Heygate Estate redevelopment which consists of a one hectare triangular shaped site, bounded by Rodney Road, Balfour Street and Victory Place. The key principles of the design were presented, which included illustrative drawings of initial proposals for the redevelopment of the site.

The exhibition explained the thinking behind the ideas for the first phase, shared the design aspirations for the development and sought the aspirations of the local community. The urban design principles were also explained, including:

• building heights

• streetscapes

• tree retention

• integration with the surrounding context

• access and connections.

Ideas for interim use of the site prior to the commencement of construction were also presented.

Between Wednesday 19th October and Saturday 22nd October 2011 a further exhibition will showcase the Concept Masterplan for the remainder of the Heygate Estate. Members of the project team will be available to discuss this Masterplan and listen to people’s views. The exhibition will take from 10am-5pm each day at the dedicated ‘Elephant and Castle consultation hub’ located at 182 Walworth Road. Members of the project team will be available to discuss these ideas and listen to people’s views.

Lend Lease Project Director for Elephant and Castle, Rob Deck, said:

“We’re pleased with the level of interest shown in our ideas for the first phase of the redevelopment & the feedback we have received will be invaluable in helping to develop our ideas. We are also looking forward to sharing our Concept Masterplan for the remainder of the Heygate at the forthcoming exhibition commencing on the 19th October. We want to encourage the community to contribute and we need the input of local people to help inform the next stage of the design development.

We are working in partnership with the London Borough of Southwark to redevelop the Elephant & Castle. We’re committed to the whole area and are keen to establish the Elephant and Castle as a thriving and successful urban quarter”

Councillor Fiona Colley, cabinet member for regeneration at Southwark Council, said: “I’m pleased that local people are involved with what’s happening at each stage of the council’s £1.5bn project to transform Elephant and Castle. I look forward to plans for the new housing starting to take shape.”
