Leisure and Culture

Elephant and Castle has a rich cultural life – this will be strengthened, giving local people the chance to experience world class art, music and theatre on their doorsteps. New galleries, cinemas and performance venues will be opened, while public spaces will play host to travelling exhibitions and temporary installations. The new Siobhan Davies Dance Studio in St George’s Road is leading the way, working with local schools and community groups to bring dance to a wider audience.

Specific new developments will include a leisure centre in Faraday Square to replace the existing one in St Mary’s Churchyard, a new library and the Southwark Discovery Centre, a science museum on the current old Town Hall site on Walworth Road.

Over the next ten years, the council will also aim to attract more creative industries to the area (Southwark already has the fifth highest number of creative industry employees among London boroughs), with new workshop space as well as targeted advice and support for small businesses.
