The Elephant and Castle regeneration is underpinned by a wide range of networks, organisations and individuals, including residents, local businesses, education and health providers, government, community and voluntary groups, statutory bodies, and people working in the area.
A range of social and economic programmes were implemented for local people through the Elephant Links Single Regeneration Budget (SRB) programme, and this work is being continued by the newly-formed Elephant and Castle Trust.
Southwark Council also liaises with London partners such as the Greater London Authority (GLA), London Development Agency (LDA) and Transport for London.
Over the past three years, the council has embarked upon a comprehensive consultation programme to inform people of the regeneration plans. A number of exhibitions have been held at various locations throughout the borough, and a huge programme of marketing communications, events and meetings has taken place. An extensive referencing exercise has also been run on the Heygate Estate, where a specialist team of officers has visited residents to assess their housing needs.
The aim is to make sure that residents and businesses are be better equipped for the change process, and can take advantage of new opportunities arising from the regeneration. Creating a better environment for local people is the cornerstone of the regeneration programme, and for it to be deemed a success, local people need to feel that they have a chance to carve out their future in Elephant and Castle.
