The regeneration programme will create a massively improved shopping experience for local people, and a new shopping ‘capital’ for Southwark. At the same time, the council wants to attract shoppers from further afield, encouraging those who would usually visit Oxford Street to spend their money in Elephant and Castle instead.
In order to achieve this, the range and quality of shops will be improved, while also retaining a local feel, reflecting the diversity of the area. The existing shopping centre will be demolished, replaced by the new-look Walworth Road, providing high street shopping with a mix of well-known names and smaller, independent stores. Further retail outlets will be situated on Heygate Boulevard, along with smaller stalls and shops in the new Market Square.
