Design

The Elephant and Castle development is ambitious, and the intention is no less than to create a whole new sense of place, through innovative, high quality design. There will be some iconic buildings, particularly in the Civic Square and along Walworth Road and Heygate Boulevard. But there will also be strong public buildings, like the new library and city academy, as well as high quality ‘background’ buildings.

Southwark Council worked closely with leading architects on the development framework and is setting high standards in the design of 5,000 new homes for the area. Over the next ten years, it will continue in this vein, running regular competitions to encourage design excellence across the board.
