Work to carry out major improvements at St Mary's Churchyard in Elephant and Castle has begun, following a £1.35m grant from the London Development Agency. The historic space has been desolate and underused for many years. Now, a comprehensive revamp will reinstate it as a must-visit, family-friendly park.
Among the improvements will be a new playground, seating and planted areas. Easily accessible entrances will also create a safer, more open and pleasant environment.
The St Mary's project is just the first stage in the wider redevelopment of the southern part of Elephant and Castle, which will also include the long-awaited removal of the subways.
Councillor Richard Thomas, executive member for regeneration said: Open space is a vital part of regeneration and the rejuvenated churchyard will really complement the area. It's not just about buildings: projects like this show that a green environment, in all senses, is central to our plans."
