Exciting new projects enter construction stage

Over £300m worth of construction work has started in Elephant and Castle, signalling a phase of rapid progress on the regeneration scheme.

Work has begun on the demolition of Castle House, the site of the former Pizzeria Castello Restaurant (which has temporarily closed). Multiplex announced at its new Wembley stadium opening that this scheme will be its first UK development following the completion of the stadium, and will consist of 407 new apartments in a dramatic 43 storey tower.

Designed by Hamiltons, the international architect based in
Chelsea, the new scheme represents the first of the major landmark towers that will be built at the heart of the new Elephant and Castle.

Work is already well advanced on 200 residential apartments at O-Central on
Crampton Street, where England and Chelsea captain John Terry recently ‘topped out’ the new building and announced on television that he has begun purchasing a portfolio of properties in the area.

Construction work has also started on Oakmayne Plaza, a new residential and retail scheme on the site of the former Volvo garage on the New Kent Road. As well as over 200 new homes, the scheme will bring back a full time cinema to the Elephant for the first time in ten years.

An exhibition of plans by Richard Rogers Architects of the proposed residential scheme on the site of the London Park Hotel has also recently been displayed. This scheme contains 470 new homes including a range of flats earmarked for key workers. The building has also been designed to provide a new home for the Southwark Playhouse – which is relocating from its former premises in Southwark Bridge Road.
