Southwark Council is making great leaps in bringing quality sustainable energy to the borough.
Some of the largest organisations in Europe - including Alcatel, EDF, Hewlett Packard, Laing O’Rourke, Siemens, and Veola - have expressed interest in being part of Southwark council’s pioneering approach to sustainable development.
Fifteen 'stage one documents' have been received by Southwark council detailing proposals for a Multi-Utility Services Company (MUSCo) which would provide locally generated heat and electricity, supply non-potable water and build a fibre optic communications infrastructure to the redeveloped Elephant and Castle area in South London.
The MUSCo will be a vital part of the £1.5bn regeneration programme and will deliver to 5,300 new homes and 75,000 sq m of new retail and leisure space.
Richard Thomas, Southwark Council's executive member for regeneration, said: “Southwark is delighted at the prospect of delivering this scheme, which in terms of scale and scope is at the forefront of sustainable development in the UK.
"The strength of this response from interested parties shows significant market confidence in Southwark's approach to sustainability.
"It is heartening that the excellent response to this project indicates that some of the biggest players in the utilities and infrastructure sectors in Europe share our view of the future: responsible urban development."
