Next five scheme designs revealed for Elephant and Castle’s Heygate Estate

1 September 2006

de Rijke Marsh Morgan and S333 were among five architects chosen this week to design the next five Heygate Estate replacement housing schemes in Elephant and Castle.

To ensure quality of design across the fifteen schemes being built to replace the 1960s estate, Southwark Council has created an innovative procurement approach that will introduce fresh and modern designs into the often dull and standardised models of social housing.

Housing association selection and architectural commissioning processes have been separated and a competition panel of seventeen small to medium sized practices have been shortlisted to design the schemes. Architects have now been appointed for eleven of the schemes.

A panel of Southwark Council officers, Heygate residents and the council’s housing association partners, Family Mosaic, Affinity, London and Quadrant, Guinness Trust and Wandle made the following selections:

dRMM: Harper Road site two
Harper Road

S333: New Kent Road
New Kent Road

Loates Taylor Shannon: Townsend Street

Panter Hudspith: Royal Road

Cartwright Pickard: Newington South

Chris Horn, Elephant and Castle development director,  said:

‘Once again we have seen a stunning selection of designs submitted for the various sites. The standards are extremely high so final selection is actually extremely difficult. All of the design teams have shown a real commitment to the projects and reflect the collective sense of purpose that has developed between Southwark, the housing associations and the practices themselves.

We have now selected design teams for the first eleven sites and four more will be appointed in September. I think that we can expect to see some wonderful buildings over the next three years. ’

Nathan Gravesande from Wandle Housing Association said,

‘We are delighted by the progress that we have made. We entered the Elephant and Castle project absolutely committed to achieving the highest design standards and the quality of the designs selected gives us full confidence that we will achieve our objectives.
