Around 200 Heygate Estate residents enjoyed a fun-day held by Southwark Council on Saturday July 23 in Elephant and Castle.
Entertainment included a roving clown, band, jugglers and a giant inflatable jungle. Children were also taught tricks at a special circus school, and were transformed into their favourite characters by face painters.
Southwark Council officers were at the event to discuss the rehousing process with Heygate residents. Heygate Estate is set to be demolished as part of the £1.5 billion make-over of Elephant and castle. All residents will be rehoused in new homes in and around the Elephant and Castle and the council’s dedicated rehousing team has been visiting residents to assess their housing needs for the last nine months.
Construction has recently started on the very first new housing – a 31-unit development located in Wansey Street, which is managed by Southern Housing Group and has been designed by award-winning architects de Rijke Marsh Morgan (dRMM).
Chris Horn, development director of the Elephant and Castle regeneration said:
“We were pleased to see residents from Heygate enjoying the day and also to have the opportunity to discuss the regeneration with them in a relaxed environment.”
