Black History Month Event: Afar yet so Close 2009

15 September 2009

As part of Black History Month commemorations, Community Action Southwark is organising an event aimed at celebrating diversity as well as promoting community cohesion between Southwark’s South American and African communities.

The event will reaffirm our commitment to engaging and empowering minority communities, as well as our support to cohesion initiatives between different communities.

Following the success of Afar, Yet so Close 2008 which bought together three of the largest ethnic minority communities in Southwark, this years event will focus on celebrating diversity and multi-culturalism, and explore how these can contribute to enriching the borough / city, as well as local communities.

This three evening event will take place during the week starting 05th October 2009, at two different locations; the first two days will be based at the Keyworth Centre, London Southbank University and the last evening will be at Inspire @ St Peters, the Crypt, St Peter’s Church.

  • Tuesday 06th and Wednesday 07th October, all day: Arts and Photographic Exhibition
  • Tuesday 06th and Wednesday 07th October, 6:30 – 9:00pm: documentary screenings, lectures and debates about “Diversity and Cohesion in Southwark and London”
  • Friday 09th October, 5:30 – 8:30pm: Celebrating Diversity

Here are some of the feedback we had last year:

“That was wonderful, excellent, vibrant and multicultural. It was just perfect!!”

“The event was very good: well done! Hope it continues next year”

“Excellent event and very informative; we need to have more of these but also attended by more Black people”

“More Black people needed to know about this”

“In the three hours I was there, I saw three very informative and well structured presentations and learned a lot. It was very good; congratulations!!”
