Next week sees the launch of Reuben Powell’s fabulous drawings of the local Elephant and Castle area which will be exhibited in the Elephant and Castle Shopping Centre.
Two schools, St Josephs Year 3 and Charlotte Sharman Year 6 have sketched 6 metre charcoal drawings depicting their view of the cityscape of the elephant and castle.
Southwark's young people said in the Young People’s Plan that they wanted more Arts activities and this exhibition forms part of the children’s Art education, as sometimes teachers do not always have the training or expertise to deliver this curriculum.
With the help, Southwark Arts and Education, the one day project formed part of the school curriculum and continued until the end of the school year. Made in Reuben’s studio, the one day drawing projects took one hour to produce. This project is a result of the 'Every Child Matters' government initiative that stresses ‘excellence and Enjoyment', can come out of involvement with a professional artist.
.
While the Elephant undergoes major changes, children need to understand what is happening in their environment and by also using the locality as a learning resource is a way of developing a relevant and meaningful curriculum, and more likely to engage children.
Come and have a look at the exhibition which runs from Tuesday 18 August until Friday 18 September on the upper level of the Elephant and Castle Shopping Centre.
