Lend Lease commences Elephant and Castle community engagement

Elephant and Castle regeneration developers, Lend Lease with partners First Base and Oakmayne, are this week commencing a series of meetings with community groups in Elephant and Castle to set out the next steps in the area’s renewal.

Initial meetings will take place over the next three months and will be followed by a series of road shows where local people can meet the development team and discuss the emerging master plan and opportunities resulting from the regeneration.

To ensure continuity from Southwark Council’s extensive work on the Elephant and Castle framework for development, the developers recently appointed Make Architects to assist in developing the master plan. Make has been involved with Elephant and Castle for five years and is now advancing regeneration principles that have been widely consulted upon and have the broad support of local people.

Consultation events at different points in the master plan’s development will be arranged for local people to view the proposals and help shape the design in preparation for a comprehensive planning application for the area’s revitalisation.

Lend Lease Europe Chairman, Nigel Hugill, said:
‘We are looking forward to sharing our thinking with those living and working in Elephant and Castle. As with all of our regeneration projects we recognise that building these relationships is vital to the future success of our work. There will be many opportunities for people to come and meet us and to discuss the emerging master plan and the area’s future. We will be talking more about this programme in January’s edition of Quarter Magazine.’

The Lend Lease, First Base and Oakmayne partnership is also working towards signing a regeneration agreement with Southwark Council in the spring of next year. Of utmost priority is developing local training and employment initiatives for local people. First Base will commence building its 44-storey tower adjacent to the new St. Mary’s Churchyard Park in the New Year. This will contain 470 affordable, social rented and for sale properties, along with a café and a new home for the Southwark Playhouse. Another First Base residential scheme, Printworks in Amelia Street, was recently granted planning permission and will commence construction during the spring of 2008.

Oakmayne has now completed its Crampton Street mixed-use residential development. Its New Kent Road scheme that includes cinemas, shops and restaurants, will be being reconsidered for a revised planning approval in December with construction anticipated to commence in 2008.
